Hogwarts has been through a lot in its time including the most well known attack of the last century in the wizarding world - the attack lead by Lord Voldemort. Or it was the most well known attack until recently. When a Masquerade ball turned into a massacre more than one hundred students were killed or injured and a number of professors were found to be accomplices with the band of creatures who orchestrated the onslaught.
In the end more students left the school after being pulled out by their parents or guardians; however, Hogwarts would not just roll over. After an intense investigation lead by the Ministry of Magic's Magical Law Enforcement department the remaining Hogwarts staff was deemed capable and trustworthy and the school was allowed to reopen for the new term. Still, little was uncovered of the reason for the attack - that investigation is still ongoing.
The school is open, but the amount of students is low. Tension is high and causes fights to break out constantly. Everyone is turned against each other, not knowing who was on whose side during the dance. Meanwhile, all but one of the assailants in the massacre have escaped capture and are at large to continue whatever it was they began. On top of that, they might have just been part of a bigger picture - something much more devious than anyone could have imagined. There are rumors of a new evil lord surfacing who might even surpass Lord Voldemort's strength and cruelty, but that's what they say every time some dark wizard shows up and thus only time will tell the truth...
